Fabric

Khadi

Khadi is a handspun and handwoven fabric traditionally made from cotton, though silk and wool variants also exist. It emerged in India as a symbol of self-reliance and rural craftsmanship, most famously promoted during Mahatma Gandhi’s independence movement. The fabric is created by spinning fibres on a charkha (spinning wheel) and weaving them on handlooms, resulting in a slightly textured, breathable cloth with natural irregularities that make each piece unique.

Khadi is valued for its durability, lightweight feel, and adaptability to warm and temperate climates. Its production supports rural artisan communities, preserves traditional hand-spinning and hand-weaving techniques, and maintains a low environmental impact compared to industrial textiles.

At Nüwa Mano, we choose Khadi for its authenticity, slow production process, and connection to heritage craft. Each piece in our collection reflects the care, skill, and intention of the artisans who bring this fabric to life.
