Indigo

Indigo is a natural plant-based pigment derived from the leaves of the Indigofera plant, traditionally grown in India. The dyeing process is entirely artisanal: leaves are harvested, fermented, and processed into a rich blue pigment, which is then used to colour cotton, silk, or other natural fibres.

Fibres are carefully dipped into the dye baths and oxidised to achieve deep, lasting blue tones. Each batch reflects subtle variations in shade, a signature of hand-dyeing. Using natural indigo preserves fibre strength and allows fabrics to remain breathable and soft, unlike synthetic alternatives.

At Nüwa Mano, we use indigo-dyed fabrics to connect our collection to heritage craft, sustainable textile practices, and artisan skill, supporting rural communities who maintain these centuries-old dyeing traditions.
